How to Choose the Right Type of Business Sign for Your New Building

Posted on

If you've had a building constructed for your business, you'll want to think about the type of signage you'll put outside. When a business is part of a plaza or office complex, you may have limitations according to your landlord's restrictions, but a building you own may mean more choices for bringing in customers or clients with a sign. Note a few tips for choosing the right type of sign you'll have put out front.

Pole signs

A pole sign is a very basic and standard sign that might work for just one business, as there is usually limited space on a pole for signage itself. A pole sign might be good for when you need a separate space for changeable lettering, such as for advertising a sale underneath the actual business sign. Note that a pole might sway in high winds, so be mindful of this choice in the tropics or anywhere that might be prone to storms and hurricanes.

Pylon signs

Pylon signs are very large signs that have poles on both sides so they're sturdier than a standard pole sign. This is especially important for very tall signs that you might need for being able to spot your business from a distance or in heavy traffic, where a standard height sign might not be so visible. A pylon sign can usually accommodate signs for many different businesses but can also work for just one business. To have your sign tall enough to be seen from a distance, opt for a pylon sign.

Blade signs

A blade sign juts out and is perpendicular from the entryway or wall of your building; it's typically used to attract the attention of pedestrians who are walking across the front of a building. If your new building is located in an area with lots of foot traffic, keep in mind that a sign facing the road may be easily overlooked by passersby. Choose a blade sign that faces those pedestrians instead.

Sidewalk signs

These signs are self-explanatory and are also often used in areas with lots of foot traffic, as they are easily overlooked by vehicle traffic. However, they have the advantage of being movable so you can reposition the sign as needed; if diners sitting outside block the view of the sign to other pedestrians, move it to the opposite side of the sidewalk. Sidewalk signs are also easy to access so you can change the lettering and wording very quickly without using an extension pole or ladder.
